Intersectional Roundtable

Introducing our Intersectional Roundtable! This roundtable is a monthly hybrid space for anybody at any intersection of identities to come develop new work, deepen their relationship to process, and be in community with other creatives across experiences. Our goal is to safely foster in-person space while remaining accessible to community members who cannot gather in person. This development space is not limited solely to writers and composers; anyone excited about new work is welcome. We are curious about how choreographers, directors, dramaturgs, designers, dancers, and actors can enrich the process of developing a change-making new musical by being involved early in its ideation.

Part of MTF’s mission is to dismantle oppressive ideologies in the creation of change-making new musicals. That can only be made possible when folks are aware of who they are in the world and the identities they bring into the space. This consciousness of social positioning and an awareness of who you are as a person as well as an artist is important to the overall integrity of the space. Who we are in the world deeply shapes what and how we create.

You do not have to share in order to attend. Please register to share or to participate as a supportive community member. We can’t wait to see you there! Christin Eve Cato is a playwright, dramaturg, and performing artist from the Bronx. She holds an MFA in Playwriting from Indiana University and completed her BA in Political Science and Philosophy at Fordham University. Cato is also a graduate of Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School for Music and Art and the Performing Arts. She is affiliated with NYC theater companies, Pregones/PRTT (ensemble member & former Resident Dramaturg), INTAR Theatre (UNIT 52 ensemble member), and the Latinx Playwrights Circle. She is also a playwright in the WP Theater 2022-2024 Pipeline Lab. Cato’s artistic style is expressed through Caribbean culture and the Afro-Latinx diaspora, honoring her Puerto Rican and Jamaican roots. Recent productions include Sancocho (Visión Latino Theater Company / Midwest Premiere- 5th Annual Destinos International Festival / Chicago) and NYC Off-Broadway include, The Good Cop (DUAF 2022); and an audio play journey, The Mayor of Hell’s Kitchen Presents: A Time Traveling Journey Through NYC’s Wild West (The Parsnip Ship & Playwrights Horizons/ NYC). Publication/Contributor credits include: We Are Not Neutral (Amazon Books) and, launching soon, Latinx Actor Training (Routledge). She has also developed her work with The Playwrights Center, The Classical Theatre of Harlem, The Kennedy Center, The Musical Theatre Factory, The Artist Coop, Milagro Theatre, Borderlands Theater, Teatro Vivo, Smith College, Indiana University, Texas State University, Cardinal Stage, The Road Theatre Company, Piper Theatre Productions, and many others. Matt Barbot is a Nuyorican writer from Brooklyn, NY. He recently contributed to Lynn Nottage and Miranda Haymon’s immersive The Watering Hole theatre event at Signature Theatre Center in NYC, and received special praise from The New Yorker and The New York Times. Frijoles, his monologue starring Raul Esparza, is available to view on YouTube from The 24 Hour Plays. In 2018, El Coquí Espectacular and the Bottle of Doom received its world premiere at Two River Theater. In October 2022, Matt became the winner of The Black List’s first-ever theatre commission. He is a New York Theatre Workshop 2050 Fellow and has an MFA in playwriting from Columbia University.
